Liverpool transfers: ‘Reds should sign Calum Chambers’
Liverpool transfers: Mark Lawrenson says the Reds should look to bring in Calum Chambers from Southampton this summer
Liverpool should sign Calum Chambers from Southampton to add competition for Glen Johnson at right-back, according to Mark Lawrenson.
Brendan Rodgers is out to bolster his defensive options this summer after his side kept just 10 clean sheets last season as they finished second in the Premier League.
And former Liverpool defender Lawrenson feels that current first-choice right-back Johnson would benefit from the increased competition that Chambers’ arrival would bring.
“[Glen] Johnson has been found out. This World Cup has exposed the defensive frailties many of his detractors have targeted in years gone by,” Lawrenson told the Liverpool Echo.
“But if I were Liverpool I would still want to hold on to him. At the moment there are very few players available in that position that are actually better than him.
“The best thing to do would be to get a youngster like Calum Chambers from Southampton. Give Johnson another year and allow someone like Chambers to really compete and push him for a place in the starting 11.”
