Liverpool’s Luis Suarez needs help, says Everton boss Roberto Martínez
Roberto Martínez says Luis Suárez needs help after the Liverpool striker is caught up in yet another biting scandal
Roberto Martinez says Luis Suarez “needs help” after the Liverpool striker was caught up in another biting scandal on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old appeared to sink his teeth into the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini in the second half of Uruguay’s 1-0 World Cup win over Italy.
Suarez was banned for 10 games for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League clash at Anfield in April 2013 and was also punished for the same offence during his time at Ajax.
I just seriously think that he needs help
And Martinez believes that the Uruguay forward needs help to control his “unacceptable” behaviour.
“There is no doubt that the quality of the talent that he has,” Martinez told ESPN.
“He can win games single-handed and he’s got that focus, that mentality that he can get back from a situation he shouldn’t have derived.
“But the behaviour, I just seriously think that he needs help. If you cannot control yourself in those moments, you need some sort of help because that’s just unacceptable on a football pitch.”
Suarez was named PFA player of the year last season after scoring 31 Premier League goals as Liverpool finished second in the Premier League.
Fifa, football’s governing body, has opened disciplinary proceedings against the striker following the incident on Tuesday.
Suarez could be banned for up to 24 matches or two years. The striker and the Uruguayan Football Association have until 21:00BST on Wednesday to respond to Fifa.
