Thomas Vermaelen’s agent has denied that there is a deal in place for the Arsenal defender to join Manchester United this summer.

Widespread media reports on Monday morning had claimed that the Red Devils had secured an agreement in principle to lure the Gunners captain to Old Trafford following the conclusion of the World Cup.

However, the Belgium defender’s representative Kees Vos has told BBC Sport that “no deal is in place with United or any other club”.

The 28-year-old’s future has been a source of speculation in recent months after he fell behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order at Emirates Stadium.

Vermaelen, who Arsenal reportedly value at around £10m, was limited to just seven Premier League starts for the north Londoners last season but also made seven appearances as a substitute.

The centre-half last month refused to comment on the speculation about his future. “I can’t talk about my future now. We’ll have to see,” Vermaelen said back in May.
