Montpellier president Louis Nicollin has admitted his relief that the Ligue 1 club did not sell Remy Cabella to Newcastle for €8m (£6.5m) after he was called up to France’s World Cup squad.

Midfielder Cabella, who has also been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea, has earned a place in France’s 23-man squad for the tournament in Brazil after an injury to Clement Grenier.

And Nicollin is hoping that a solid World Cup showing can push the 24-year-old’s price-tag up ahead of the new season.

“I’m happy [for Cabella’s call-up], because he’s a great kid,” he told L’Equipe.

“This shows the quality of our academy. It is highly probable that I’ll go see all the national team’s games.

“I’m happy I didn’t sell him [for] €8m to Newcastle.”

Speaking back in February, Cabella admitted that it would be a “dream” to join Manchester United.

“Manchester United? You must ask my father who cares for me. Until there is something serious, I will say nothing,” said Cabella.

“It is also a matter of respect for my club and [Montpellier president] Louis Nicollin.

“But Manchester United is always a dream for any player.”
