Manchester United have agreed a £28.7m deal to sign Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, according to reports in Spain.

The midfielder’s release clause is reportedly set to increase to £33.5m in July, and Spanish newspaper Marca claims that the Red Devils are moving to conclude the deal before next month.

United were heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old last summer but a transfer failed to materialise.

Herrera is reported to have agreed a four-year contract with United worth around £9.2m.

The reports come after Herrera’s agent insisted that his client is set to stay at Athletic Bilbao.

“There’s nothing new. There have been rumours all year saying United wanted to sign him and then Jose Mourinho and Chelsea, but I haven’t heard anything,” Arturo Canales told AS earlier in June.

“The focus of the player is Athletic and nothing else. Ander is on vacation and he only thinks about next season with Athletic, because he is very excited to play in the Champions League with this team.”
