Patrick Vieira and Fabio Cannavaro may be World Cup winners, but Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill still managed to put the pair in their place during ITV’s World Cup coverage last night.

The former Celtic and Aston Villa manager was clearly irked when host Adrian Chiles quizzed the former glasses wearing midfielder whether he showed bravery in a defensive wall during his playing career.

When it comes to the Champions League, I’ve won two of them. I’d just like to know how many you have won?

And O’Neill proved that Roy Keane isn’t the only member of the Irish coaching staff with a sharp tongue as the former Nottingham Forest midfielder quickly reminded Cannavaro, Chiles and Vieira of his two European Cup triumphs in 1979 and 1980.

“I actually didn’t wear glasses when I was playing,” O’Neill said.

“So what you’re saying now is about an older gentleman. I did actually play the game at one time.

“Fabio wasn’t terribly sure that I did play the game and I had to remind him despite the fact that there are two World Cup winners here, actually, when it comes to the Champions League which used to be called the European Cup, I’ve won two of them.

“I’d just like to know how many you have won? Brilliant! And I was brave in the wall…!”
