Ozil, Dempsey and more: Twitter reacts as Germany & USA progress

Mesut Özil and Clint Dempsey both tweet their thoughts as Germany and USA both reach the last 16 of the World Cup

Germany reached the last 16 of the World Cup as winners of Group G after a 1-0 victory over the United States, who also qualified for the first knockout round.

Thomas Muller once again proved the difference as his quality finish in the 55th minute sent Joachim Low’s side through top of their group.

Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Ghana ensured that the USA made it through on goal difference after having picked up four points from their three group games in Brazil.

The conclusion of Group G prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) is quick to offer his congratulations to the USA: “Congrats #USA – you lose, but you win. Welcome to the confusing world of real football.”

Former USA international Brian McBride (@BMcBride20) is thrilled: “Very proud to be a fan of @ussoccer. Well done to the players and staff!!!”

Stuart Holden (@stuholden) clears up some queries with his followers: “Why is everyone saying Ronaldo saved us? If it had finished a tie we still would have advanced! Job done, well done @ussoccer !!”

Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall (@NevilleSouthall) is impressed by Tim Howard: “Well done Tim and the USA. Playing as well as ever”

USA striker Clint Dempsey (@clint_dempsey) keeps it short and sweet: “#1N1T”

As does goalkeeper Brad Friedel (@friedel_b): “A simple WELL DONE is in order for the US!!!

Golfer Lee Westwood (@WestwoodLee) also chimes in: “Well done to the USA team getting through the group of death.”

Former Bolton captain Kevin Davies (@Kevin__Davies) adds his voice to the mix: “Well done to @ussoccer for qualifying out of a tough group. Will give probably Belgium a tough game in last 16”

Germany playmaker Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088) is thrilled to help his side reach the last 16: “we made it through the water battle even without water wings: win and first of the group! yeah! #DFBTeam #Brasil2014 ”
