Rio Ferdinand has backed Louis van Gaal to be a success at Manchester United when he takes charge next season.

The 62-year-old Netherlands head coach will take over at Old Trafford following the conclusion of the World Cup after being appointed as David Moyes’ successor at the end of the season.

I hope they do well and go on to win the league next year. Time will tell

There will be no place for Ferdinand at United after the club opted to release the veteran defender after 12 years.

When asked if he was disappointed not to get the opportunity to work under Van Gaal, Ferdinand told the Daily Mail: “Yes, a little bit. But you can’t cry over spilt milk, it happened.

“It’s a new era now and I wish him well. I hope they do well and go on to win the league next year. Time will tell.

“I think he’ll come in and do things a bit differently to how they were done before, so hopefully that will be a good thing.”
