Robin van Persie leaps to defence of Man United team-mate Wayne Rooney
Robin van Persie says Wayne Rooney "has given everything" for England and defends the striker's form

Robin van Persie has come out in strong support of Wayne Rooney, describing the recent criticism of the England striker as “unfair”.
Rooney’s form has been under the spotlight in recent weeks after he was played out of position on the left wing in England’s defeat by Italy.

The 28-year-old striker scored the Three Lions’ equaliser in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat by Uruguay after being deployed in a central role by England boss Roy Hodgson.
Van Persie feels that the criticism of Rooney has been unwarranted, and revealed that the striker was one of the reasons behind his decision to switch Arsenal for Manchester United two years ago.
“It’s really unfair for people to try to blame him for England’s disqualification,” said Van Persie.
“Wayne played well against Italy, even out of position, and set up a goal. In the Uruguay game he scored, worked his socks off and came within inches of netting three more.
“He has given everything for his country, just like he always does. Wayne is one of the reasons why I joined Manchester United and just by training with this guy you know he is a world-class player.”
