Spain 0 Chile 2: Player ratings as the holders become the first team to crash out of the World cup

By Tom Wellman

Iker Casillas Must feel fortunate to have retained his place when Xavi and Pique missed out. Another mistake proves his leadership must be put aside in place of ability and confidence. Jose Mourinho must be smiling wryly after omitting him 18 months ago. International future at risk. 2/10

Cesar Azpilicueta Part of a defence that looks dreadfully shaky. Unable to get forwards convincingly. 5

Javi Martinez Thrown into the fire and performed better than Pique on Friday. His positional dilemma sums up Spain’s current predicament – are they a team in transition or moving backwards? 5

Sergio Ramos So distanced from his stellar season at Real Madrid. Was a shoe-in for Ballon d’Or before World Cup but was nothing like his best in this game. Sly kick at Vargas late on and missed several chances. 3

Jordi Alba Was quick to tighten up in the centre of defence, but could not prevent opener. 5

Xabi Alonso Disastrously poor. Had been looked upon to lead with Xavi out. Instead endured one of his worst performances ever. Off the pace, woeful technically and sloppy with the ball. Subbed off at half-time. 2

Sergio Busquets Failed to lead and take the initiative without his partner Xavi. Busquets will be looked upon to move Spain into a new era but is too often a passenger. Summed up by his shocking miss. Could have changed the game but highlights his inability in the final third. 3

Andres Iniesta His feet are crafted from pure gold-dust, with brief signs against Chile. Hard to blame such a creative talent, but must take responsibility for his own quiet performances. 5

Pedro Tried hard but Jara had his number all evening. Unable to use his pace in the final third. 6

David Silva Couldn’t unlock Chile’s defence. Static too often and decision making let him down. Did not want responsibility. 2

Diego Costa His style doesn’t suit Spain. Service up to him is limited but Costa also lacks confidence. Could have eased pressure by shooting earlier but looks short of match sharpness. Hesitant with his chances and looked clumsy. 3

Koke Quiet but his involvement spurred Spain forwards. 5

Fernando Torres Clumsy once again. 4

Santi Cazorla His enthusiasm was pleasing and actually tried shots on goal. 6

Claudio Bravo Made the right decisions when coming for crosses and saved nicely from Cazorla and Iniesta. Big figure for Chile. 9

Gonzalo Jara Strong and robust defending throughout. Pedro had no involvement. Solid performance. 7

Francisco Silva Read the Spanish forward play expertly in first half. Extremely prudent and controlled. 7

Gary Medel In unfamiliar position but dealt with Costa properly. Strength, intelligence and composure all in one performance. Superb from the converted midfielder. 9

Mauricio Isla Bombed forwards and unlucky not to score. Disciplined like his teammates and looked full of energy. 7

Charles Aranguiz Began quietest of Chile midfield but pressed and battled throughout. His first touch for the goal arguably better than his swipe for the goal. Supported the front players regularly. Desperately unlucky to go off injured. 8

Marcelo Diaz Challenged and fought for everything. Epitomised Chile’s team performance. An unsung hero. 8

Eugenio Mena Great strength and constantly pressed Spain. Tracked back efficiently. 7

Arturo Vidal Tracked runs and loose balls up and down the pitch. Hard to locate the Juve man to a specific position as he chased down everything. The Manchester United target’s quality came through up front and was canny in his distribution. 9

Eduardo Vargas Composed for the goal and proved his ability alongside Vidal and Sanchez in that forward trio. 7

Alexis Sanchez Chilean lynchpin. His link up play showed Spain what they were so badly lacking and will surely return to the Nou Camp with a point to prove next season. A nuisance throughout and far superior to what Costa provided for Spain. Counter-attacked effectively. 9

Felipe Gutierrez Slotted in comfortably. Fresh legs only improved Chile. 6

Carlos Carmona Brief run out. 5
