Switzerland 2 France 5: Player ratings as Karim Benzema stars for les Bleus

By Richard Potter

Diego Benaglio For all his woes, he saved a penalty in the first half and performed an impressive double save to deny the French at 5-0 down. Commendable. 6/10

Stephan Lichtsteiner Full of running, kept going until the end without letting his shoulders drop. 6

Johan Djourou Will be having nightmares about the French front four for weeks, second best. 4

Steve von Bergen Taken off with a suspected broken cheekbone within the opening 10 minutes. N/A

Ricardo Rodriguez The Swiss defence were at fault for the two quick goals as France capitalised early on, which made it all the more difficult to get back into the game. 4

Valon Behrami Lack of awareness, passing the ball back only to find the feet of Benzema to feed Valbuena for his first and France’s second. Poor. 3

Gokhan Inler Mr Consistency, captain Inler couldn’t rescue his side from a hammering at the hands of France. His mistake gifted the French their fifth goal of the evening. Produced an exquisite pass to set up Xhaka for Switzerlands second. 6

Xherdan Shaqiri Full of guile but no end product, made all the more difficult by the goals going in at the other end, demoralising the Swiss players around him. 6

Granit Xhaka Scored a wonderful goal to make it 2-5. Rifled a volley past Lloris first time, over the shoulder from Inler’s ball over the French defence. 6

Admir Mehmedi Made a number of positive runs, asking questions of the French back line, only to have the door shut. 6

Haris Seferovic Ineffectual in attack, struggled. 4

Philippe Senderos Struggled to acclimatise to the pace of the French after coming on, at fault for more than one of the goals. 3

Blerim Dzemaili Came on for hapless Behrami, spared a few blushes by scoring a 32-yard free-kick on 81 minutes to deny Lloris a clean sheet. 6

Josip Drmic N/A

Hugo Lloris Relatively unchallenged until late on in the second half, should have saved the free-kick from Xhaka. 6

Mathieu Debuchy Ran tirelessly up and down the right flank, competent in his defensive duties. 7

Raphael Varane Looks set for a bright future at club and international level. Solid. 7

Mamadou Sakho The Liverpool centre-half was solid alongside Varane before being replaced. 7

Patrice Evra The experienced left-back had a good game in defence and attack. 7

Moussa Sissoko Took his goal well, great contribution throughout. 8

Yohan Cabaye Unlucky to hit the bar in the first half, seizing on the loose ball following Benzema’s failed penalty attempt. Bossed the midfield. 8

Blaise Matuidi Great composure to score France’s second, a constant threat. 8

Mathieu Valbuena A thorn in the Swiss side from the first whistle to the moment he was substituted. Great contribution to his team, could of bagged more than his first World Cup goal. 8

Olivier Giroud Capitalised on poor defending to header the French in front. 8

Karim Benzema (Man of the Match) Influential, inspiring, worthy of the number 10 shirt for France. 9

Antoine Griezmann N/A

Paul Pogba Continued to fuel the French going forward after replacing Giroud. Special. 7

Laurent Koscielny N/A
