Substitute Silvestre Varela scored a 94th-minute equaliser to help Portugal keep their World Cup hopes alive thanks to a 2-2 draw with USA.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s men appeared to be heading towards a famous win after Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey had overturned Nani’s fifth-minute strike.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to a dramatic Group G game.

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie (@Persie_Official) is thrilled to see his Red Devils team-mate on the score sheet: “Yesss @luisnani great goal!”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) will be tipping Nani for the Golden Boot next: “Nani has just matched his goal tally for Manchester United last season.”

Former Manchester City goalkeeper David James (@jamosfoundation) has noticed a subtlety in the game: “If USA look at the positioning of Portugal’s Beto for long shots, 6 yard line, they may opt for the cheeky chip!”

Tennis icon Patrick McEnroe (@PatrickMcEnroe) hails Jone’s strike: “Goaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllll”

Former Crystal Palace forward Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) is making his American followers feel at home: “What a touchdown….#USA”

Ex-England international Phil Neville (@fizzer18) may be hoping Louis van Gaal retains his services as goalkeeping coach: “Should the Portuguese keeper at least dive for that goal?? Or is it me being a keeper hater?”

Legendary American boxer Mike Tyson (@MikeTyson) even gets excited about Dempsey’s apparent winner: “Goal!!!!! #FifaWorldCup”

Australia forward Tim Cahill (@Tim_Cahill) is keen to stress the value of MLS: “Goal made in the @mls hahaha YEDLIN,BRADLEY amazing ball by ZUSI and DEMPSEY. @thesoccerdon @ussoccer don’t underestimate AMERICA #Awesome”

Hull City midfielder Tom Huddlestone (@Huddz8) is enjoying watching his former Tottenham team-mate shine on the world stage: “He plays down the left, he plays down the right that boy @clint_dempsey hahaha on fire bro”

Bolton’s American midfielder Stuart Holden (@stuholden) is gutted: “Everyone deflated after that because expectations have naturally been raised based on the way these boys are playing! #usa ! Making us proud”

Finally, former Fulham man Jay DeMerit (@D6MERIT) sums up the American performance: “Gut punch. Another gritty performance by the @ussoccer boys! On to the Germans! #iBelieve #USMNT”
