France moved to the brink of qualification to the World Cup knockout stage after a 5-2 victory over Switzerland in Group E.

Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock before Blaise Matuidi doubled France’s lead 66 seconds later, with Mathieu Valbuena, Karim Benzema and Moussa Sissoko all scoring in the second half.

Blerim Dzemaili and Granit Xhaka netted what proved to be consolation goals – and here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the ex-pros in chronological order to France’s commanding win.

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville (@fizzer18) is enjoying watching France: “That’s counter attacking with speed!!”

Retired England centre-half Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) praises les Bleus: “France looking lively! 3-zip!”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) is surprised to see Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side shipping so many goals: “I think the Swiss got confused and parked the bus at the wrong end!”

Ex-Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot (@MarioMelchiot) feels Didier Deschamps is fortunate to have quality like Paul Pogba to bring off the bench: “Not bad if you’re #fra and you can bring on #Pogba as a sub. Great #talent !! #mmlove #worldcup”

Troy Townsend (@Towno10) casts an ironic look at France’s future as opposed to England: “French planning for Euro 16, well they are making a decent enough impression in #WorldCup2014”

Former Norwich City defender Iwan Roberts (@iwanwroberts) is staggered looking at Philippe Senderos’s career: “Senderos has played for Arsenal AC Milan and now Aston Villa……how?!”

QPR midfielder Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) feels England can learn lessons from the French: “France imperious on the counter attack tonight. Deschamps with a tactical masterclass. Deschamps interestingly left quality individuals out of this squad for a better squad cohesion. Team came 1st. Can we say the same?”

Aston Villa winger Charles N’Zogbia (@CharlesNzo) reckons France missed Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho in the closing stages: “We’re missing Sakho, hope he will be fit for the next game #AllezLesBleus”

USA international Stuart Holden (@stuholden) is gutted for Benzema after the Madrid striker sees a late strike chalked off: “Ref must have had a bet on 5-2 blowing whistle before Benzema screamer ha ha!!! Well done the French, very impressive”

World Cup winner Patrick Vieira (@OfficialVieira) praises the France striker: “A fantastic team performance from #france. You can see Benzama’s talent-he was the main man. If he continues like that, they go a long way”

Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given (@No1shaygiven) appears to be tipping Deschamps’s men: “France looking good #WorldCup2014”

Finally, Vieira (@OfficialVieira) jokingly reopens his feud with Roy Keane: “Getting flashbacks sitting next to Martin O’Neill, feel like being back in the tunnel with Keane…need to sort him out…like in the tunnel”
