Wayne Rooney welcomes new Man United signing Luke Shaw to Old Trafford

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is the first of Luke Shaw's new team-mates to welcome the left-back to Old Trafford

Wayne Rooney has become the first Manchester United player to welcome new signing Luke Shaw after the England youngster completed his move to Old Trafford.

The 18-year-old left-back has signed a four-year deal with the 13-time Premier League champions after the Red Devils beat off competition for the up-and-coming star’s signature, including from Chelsea.

Shaw was part of England’s squad which were eliminated after two group-stage games at the World Cup, although the Saints youth graduate didn’t make his first appearance until the goalless draw with Costa Rica this week.

And the new United signing’s England team-mate, Rooney, was quick to welcome Shaw to Old Trafford after the Red Devils snapped up their second new signing in successive days following Ander Herrera’s transfer on Thursday.

Meanwhile, United assistant manager Ryan Giggs tipped Shaw to become a top player as he continues his development at Old Trafford.

“Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential,” Giggs said.

“He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player.

“I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfil that promise.”
