Wimbledon 2014: Heather Watson in confident mood
Wimbledon 2014: Heather Watson insists that she is feeling far more confident heading into the tournament than last year
Heather Watson insists that she is in confident mood heading into this year’s Wimbledon.
The British No1 heads to SW19 after reaching the semi-finals in Eastbourne last week and will take on Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round.
This year I’m confident. I know what I’m doing
Watson, 22, was beaten in straight sets by Madison Keys in the first round of Wimbledon last year after returning to action following a lay-off with glandular fever.
And the world No70 insists that she is in far better shape 12 months later.
“My state of mind is very different to last year,” said Watson. “Last year I wasn’t confident – I’d come back from being away for a long time. You lose the feel of playing matches, of winning. It’s tough.
“I kind of was kind of dreading going out on court, like, Oh, God, how am I going to do?
“But this year I’m confident. I know what I’m doing. I’ve got it in my mind. I visualise it. All positive thoughts.”
She added: “I’m just trying to reach my next goals. I won’t put all of my ranking on this one tournament but obviously I’d like to do well.
“I’m just going to focus on my first match. When I focus on playing well and doing the right things in my matches, the ranking and all that will come.”
