Alan Smith has backed Arsenal to be “proper challengers” for the Premier League title next season – as long as they improve their results against their closest rivals.

The Gunners led the Premier League for much of the 2013-14 campaign but came unstuck against their top-four rivals, suffering a 5-1 defeat at Liverpool and a 6-0 drubbing by Chelsea, as well as a 6-3 loss at Manchester City.

And former Arsenal striker Smith believes that Arsene Wenger’s side need to focus on improving their results against the top teams next season.

“In order for Arsenal to challenge, and to be proper challengers, I think they’ve got to better against those title challengers,” Smith told Sky Sports.

“Down the years, they have a good record against Spurs, but you know at home, it is a nice early derby for the Arsenal fans and those matches don’t normally disappoint.”

Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace at Emirates Stadium on 16 August.
