Robert Pires is backing new signing Alexis Sánchez to fire Arsenal to silverware this season.

The Gunners wrapped up a deal for the Chile international earlier this month, before also signing defender Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United.

Sánchez is understood to have turned down a switch to Liverpool in favour of moving to Emirates Stadium.

And former midfielder Pires believes that the 25-year-old is a top signing for the north London club.

“His preference for Arsenal is a big gesture for the Arsenal family,” Pires is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

“I’m very happy because the Arsenal board have signed a world-class star.

“I am sure Alexis will help to win titles. He played pretty well in the World Cup.

“I like his offensive skills and I believe he will fit very well to the system that Arsene Wenger has in mind.”

Pires added: “I am sure Arsenal will win a title this season and hopefully it will be the Champions League.”
