Arsene Wenger is wrong to say Arsenal have gambled on £16m signing Calum Chambers, according to Jason Dodd.

The Southampton youth graduate has put pen to paper on a long-term deal with the north London side, becoming the Gunners’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

The money goes up because he’s English but he’s proven in those games that he is a very good player

Chambers made his debut for the Saints on the opening day of the Premier League season, going on to rack up a further 22 top-flight appearances during the 2013/14 campaign.

Wenger described signing the 19-year-old as a gamble – however, Saints legend Dodd talked up Chambers following the defender’s big-money move to Emirates Stadium.

“I saw Arsene Wenger in the paper today saying it might be a little bit of a gamble,” Dodd told talkSPORT.

“I don’t see it as a gamble. He’s a very good player. He played 18 times last season and played fantastically well.
