Brendan Rodgers gives Emre Can injury update after Liverpool win
Brendan Rodgers says Emre Can was taken off as "a precaution" during Liverpool's win at Preston North End
Brendan Rodgers insists that Emre Can was taken off as “a precaution” during Liverpool’s pre-season win over Preston North End on Saturday.
The German midfielder made his first appearance for the Reds at Deepdale following his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen but was withdrawn on the 20-minute mark due to a minor calf problem.
He just had a little bit of tightness in his calf
However, Rodgers has played down the significance of the change and was thrilled by what he saw of the 20-year-old.
“Young Emre was excellent; he showed some lovely touches on the ball,” Rodgers told Liverpoolfc.com.
“He’s got power and pace. He just had a little bit of tightness in his calf, so as a precaution we took him off early on.”
Rodgers also reserved special praise for fellow Anfield new-boy Rickie Lambert, who played for the first half of the 2-1 victory.
“Rickie will just get better and better as he becomes more familiar with the group and becomes accustomed to the playing style,” said Rodgers.
“I thought he was excellent and worked hard. I think he’ll get goals for us and I’m delighted he’s here. He’s a wonderful character, he’s 32 years of age but is still fit and strong, and he’ll make a great contribution for us this year.
“Hopefully there’ll be more debutants to come over the course of the next few weeks.”
