Brendan Rodgers likens Philippe Coutinho to ex-Tottenham star
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes Philippe Coutinho can fill the void left by Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers believes Philippe Coutinho is more like former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric than Barcelona striker Luis Suarez.
The Brazil international is expected to fill the void left by the 27-year-old Uruguayan, who completed a £75m move to Barcelona earlier this month.
He is never going to be prolific like Luis or other strikers. He is more like a (Luka) Modric type
Rodgers feels Coutinho can become an integral figure for the Reds after Suarez’s departure, but doesn’t expect the 22-year-old to match the forward’s goal-scoring heights.
“I think he is a star and people love watching him play,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.
“He is never going to be prolific like Luis or other strikers. He is more like a (Luka) Modric type – he is the brain behind the team and gets them moving and playing.
“But you don’t have to score goals to be an exciting player and he has shown that in the season and a half he has been with us.
“At 22 years of age he has got a lot of improvement to make. The longer he is with us and understanding our way of working that learning will continue.”
Coutinho scored five goals and made seven assists 33 Premier League appearances last season.
