The Blues have activated the Spain international’s contract release clause, reported to be £32m, as manager Jose Mourinho edges close to bringing the Brazilian-born striker to Stamford Bridge.
A Chelsea statement read: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa, with Chelsea meeting the buy-out clause for the Spanish international.”
The 25-year-old scored 27 goals and made three assists in 35 top-flight appearances as the Spain forward helped Atletico win the La Liga crown in May.
Costa was similarly prolific in the Champions League, too, netting eight goals en route to the final before being substituted in the opening 10 minutes due to a persistent hamstring strain.
The Atletico man will become Chelsea’s second summer signing after the Blues landed former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas earlier this month.
