Emre Can can cover for Steven Gerrard, says Liverpool legend
Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann says Emre Can's best position is defensive midfield
Dietmar Hamann is expecting Liverpool’s new signing Emre Can to provide cover for Reds captain Steven Gerrard next season.
The 20-year-old penned a long-term deal with the Reds on Thursday after Liverpool agreed a reported £9.75m fee with Bayer Leverkusen last month.
He’s not really a goalscorer, though, so if he does play a bit further forward when Stevie does play he’s got to chip in with a few more goals than he has done in previous seasons
And Hamann, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, warned that Can will need to improve his goal record to be a success at Anfield.
“His best position is in defensive midfield,” Hamann is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo.
“And I think he’ll get games next season, because Steven Gerrard won’t be playing in every game.
“He’s ready to play and at Leverkusen last season he played out of position a lot of the time because they had quite a few injuries.
“But he has the ability play a bit further forward so if Liverpool do play with three in midfield he can certainly add something going forward.
