Dirk Kuyt has heaped praise on Robin van Persie for the leadership qualities displayed by the Netherlands captain during the World Cup.

The Manchester United striker netted Holland’s opener from the penalty spot on Saturday as Louis van Gaal’s side beat Brazil 3-0 in the third-place player-off.

There have been reports that incoming United boss Van Gaal is considering handing the Red Devils captaincy to Van Persie next season.

And former Liverpool forward Kuyt was full of admiration for the striker, who scored four goals for his country during the tournament in Brazil.

“I’ve played in five tournaments and the togetherness of the squad has never been as great as it has been at this World Cup.

“It’s something I haven’t experienced before and a lot of that is down to Robin. I think we were a genuine team.

“He was injured for two months and fought so hard to come back – the way he led the team was fantastic.”
