Frimpong, Van Wolfswinkel & more: Twitter reacts as Holland beat Costa Rica

Emmanuel Frimpong and Ricky van Wolfswinkel both tweet their thoughts as Netherlands knock Costa Rica out on penalties

Tim Krul came off the bench late in extra-time and saved two spot-kicks as the Netherlands beat Costa Rica on penalties to set up a World Cup semi-final against Argentina.

The Newcastle United goalkeeper saved from Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana to send the Dutch through after the game ended goalless following extra-time.

The Netherlands, who hit the bar three times during the match, will now take on Argentina in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Saturday night’s second quarter-final inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter, and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Norwich City man Ricky van Wolfswinkel (@RvWolfswinkel9) is the first to react to Louis van Gaal’s decision to send Krul on for the shootout: “A goalkeeper needs the pressure. Let’s do this @TimKrul. Your moment!”

Ex-Arsenal man John Hartson (@JohnHartson10) feels the decision could go either way: “Van Gaal either a genius or a ridiculous substitution.. Gotta respect his audacity and front.”

Ex-Newcastle stopper Stephen Harper (@steveharper37) is delighted for his former team-mate: “Homework, a great listener with huge confidence in @TimKrul & a bold decision = Semi-Final!! Well done to Van Gaal & especially @TimKrul!”

Krul’s Magpies team-mate Ryan Taylor (@TaylorR1984) is too: “What a crazy moment, if he doesn’t play again in the World Cup then what a moment. Buzzing for you @TimKrul”

Golfer Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) pays tribute to the clinical Dutch: “Very good penalties, feel sorry for Costa Rica but hats off to The Dutch that was clinical at the end.”

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong (@IAMFRIMPONG26) is questioning Jasper Cillessen’s reaction: “I feel for that keeper the fact he has to act like he’s happy for krul even dough he’s thinking I FU***ING hate you”

Rugby union player Ugo Monye (@ugomonye) can’t help a pun: “Sometimes u need to be Krul to be kind #VanGaal”

Ex-Everton man Tim Cahill (@Tim_Cahill) praises the Netherlands boss: “One tactical move by Van Gaal sealed the game for #NED credit where credits due. #CRC have been amazing this #WC”

Iwan Roberts (@iwanwroberts) was not impressed by Holland’s all-round display: “Robben out of that side and they are bang average!mind you could say the same about messi and the Argies”

BBC Sport pundit Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) warns Krul about his conduct after some gamesmanship from the shot-stopper: “So that was #LVG’s plan B… should be entertaining at #ManUtd this season…. well done #hol #Tim, Karma can be a bitch. .. watch out. .”

Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy (@Johnruddy86) chimes in: “Fair play to both Krul & Cillessen. As pointed out must have been discussed beforehand what an end to another great game at this World Cup.”
