Jamie Carragher ‘astonished’ Chelsea target didn’t feature in Brazil side
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher feels Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis deserved a Brazil spot
Jamie Carragher feels Brazil should have picked Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis for their World Cup campaign.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men suffered a humiliating 7-1 loss to Germany in the first World Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.
I’m still astonished that Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis is not in the squad never mind the team
Brazil’s first-choice left-back Marcelo produced a particularly disappointing performance as Scolari’s defence struggled without talisman Thiago Silva.
And Carragher feels the former Chelsea boss should have brought Blues target Luis to the World Cup and started the Atletico man ahead of Marcelo.
“It started with Marcelo, who has been poor from game one, and can’t defend,” Carragher wrote in the Daily Mail.
“He was trying to be clever with a step-over, followed by a blind pass. Germany broke, he scampered back and conceded the corner and was then apologising.
“I’m still astonished that Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis is not in the squad never mind the team as I didn’t see a better left back in Europe last season — or in this competition to date.”
Luis made two assists in 32 La Liga appearances last season, helping Diego Simeone’s men to win the top-flight crown.
