Barcelona have reached an agreement with Liverpool to sign Luis Suárez on a five-year contract for a fee believed to be around £75m.

The news was confirmed on Friday afternoon following weeks of speculation about the striker’s future, with the 27-year-old set to travel to Spain next week to undergo a medical and put pen to paper on the deal.

Suarez, who joined Liverpool from Ajax in January 2011, scored 31 league goals last season and won the PFA player of the year award.

The striker’s departure from Merseyside inevitably prompted a huge response on Twitter – and here are our pick of the updates following the announcement.

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) is not in the least bit surprised: “Luis Suarez has signed for Barca. Didn’t see that one coming.”

Ex-Liverpool man Roy Evans (@Roy_Evo) chimes in after the news is confirmed: “Sad to see Suarez go. A genius on the football pitch a privilege to watch and for me will always be a Liverpool great. I Wish him well”

Former Manchester United man Alan Tonge (@Alan_Tonge) is happy with his prediction: “I tweeted a while back about Liverpool blowing the title and then Suarez doing one. I wasn’t wrong was I? :-)”

Anfield legend Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) is glad to see the end of the saga: “Glad the Suarez saga is over. Not surprised how it ended. The club will be better off without him.”

Former Liverpool man Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) airs his views on the striker: “What a player Suarez was to watch for Liverpool. His desire and brilliant ability brought so much joy. He became world class at Liverpool.”

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) gives his full assessment: “Luis was the best Lfc player I played with bar Gerrard. Gutted he’s gone but was inevitable he would go to Spain one day. I like Bony but with all attacking mdf’s looks like it will be one striker most of the time Sturridge main man, so price important. It was the right time for everyone, he wanted to go, we got a good price considering incident at WC. We have to accept players come and go. Remember what we witnessed last few years on a weekly basis.”

And finally, Jose Enrique (@Jesanchez3) makes no mention of the deal after returning to Liverpool training: “good training with the team today. So happy to be involve again with all of them. I been missing that so much :))”
