Jamie Carragher and Gary Lineker both tweet their thoughts as Steven Gerrard announces his retirement from international football
Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from international football on Monday following a glittering 14-year England career.
Gerrard made 114 appearances for the Three Lions since making his debut against Ukraine in 2000, leaving the Liverpool skipper as England’s third most-capped player of all time.
The news comes after Gerrard, 34, captained the national side at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Gerrard’s announcement inevitably prompted plenty of reaction and tributes on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) pays tribute to his former team-mate: “Good decision by Steven Gerrard, 114 caps great servant for England. Not many young alternatives in that holding role for England. Lfc get a fresher Gerrard.”
Colchester United forward Clinton Morrison (@morrisonclinton) feels that the Three Lions will struggle to replace Gerrard: “Just heard Gerrard retired from international football what a player and captain.
