The football world has been mourning the death of Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano on Monday.

The 88-year-old, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, suffered a heart attack on Saturday and had been in an induced coma in a Madrid hospital.

The Argentina-born striker won five straight European Cups with Los Blancos, scoring in each final between 1956 and 1960. He left Real in 1964 aged 38, having scored more than 300 goals.

The sad news inevitably prompted an emotional reaction on the social networks – and here are some of the updates paying tribute to the former Real Madrid star.

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) breaks the news to his followers: “Alfredo Di Stefano has died. One of the greatest players ever. Scored in 5 successive European Cup finals. A feat never to be matched. #RIP”

The English Football Association (@FA) offers its condolences: “The FA is saddened to learn of the passing of @realmadrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano”

As does his club team-mate Sergio Ramos (@SergioRamos): “RIP Sir Alfredo Di Stefano. I will never forget each of the shared moments with such a football legend.”

Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata (@juanmata8) is also among the tweeters: “RIP Alfredo di Stefano. One of the greatest has passed away. My condolences to his family and friends.”
