Lionel Messi ‘enquired about Arsenal move last season’

Lionel Messi was reportedly interested in a shock transfer to Arsenal this summer before committing to Barcelona

Lionel Messi was reportedly interested in a shock transfer to Arsenal this summer before he committed his future to Barcelona.

The 27-year-old Argentina star signed a new contract with the Catalan giants back in May but not before asking Cesc Fabregas about a possible move to Emirates Stadium, according to Spanish newspaper Vozpopuli.

The media outlet also claims that Fabregas was discussing a potential move back to Arsenal at the time before the midfielder eventually signed for London rivals Chelsea in a £27m deal.

Messi is said to have instructed his agent to enquire whether a transfer to the Gunners could take place, before Barcelona quickly moved to sort out his future.

The newspaper reports that Arsenal would have struggled to raise the required funds to secure the deal even if they were interested in signing the forward.

Messi’s new Barcelona contract is understood to include a release clause of around £200m.
