Liverpool transfers: Brendan Rodgers expects new Steven Gerrard deal
Liverpool transfers: Brendan Rodgers is delighted that Steven Gerrard is on the brink of penning new two-year deal
Brendan Rodgers has expressed his delight that Steven Gerrard is on the brink of signing a new Liverpool deal.
The 34-year-old captain is expected to commit to the club until 2016 after the veteran midfielder called time on his England career following a disastrous World Cup campaign.
I know he can continue to play beyond this season. I have always said that. Now he doesn’t have international football, he will have that freshness
Despite a poor tournament in Brazil, Gerrard was in fine form for the Reds last season as he scored 13 goals and made 13 assists in 34 Premier League appearances.
And Liverpool manager Rodgers is confident that Gerrard’s new contract will get resolved in the coming weeks.
“I am very happy that Steven is now going to commit to Liverpool and I am sure that (his contract) is something that we will look at,” Rodgers said.
“He is in really good condition and I’m sure it is something that will happen at some point.
“Listen, for his own mind, I’m sure he will want it sorted out, absolutely. You never want to leave players with not too long to go on their contract.
“A lot has gone on at the club over the course of the summer. It is something I am sure will get sorted.
“I know he can continue to play beyond this season. I have always said that. Now he doesn’t have international football, he will have that freshness.”
