Liverpool transfers: Owen ‘surprised’ Rodgers hasn’t signed defender
Liverpool transfers: Michael Owen admits he is "surprised" that Brendan Rodgers hasn't signed a defender yet this summer
Michael Owen says he is surprised Brendan Rodgers hasn’t signed a defender this summer after Adam Lallana completed his Liverpool move.
The Southampton captain has penned a long-term deal with the Reds and becomes their third signing of the summer following deals for his former Saints team-mate Rickie Lambert and Germany Under-21 international Emre Can.
Slightly surprised Brendan Rogers hasn’t added a defender to his squad yet
Whilst Liverpool netted an incredible 102 Premier League times last season, Rodgers admitted that the Reds lost the league title due to their poor defensive record, conceding a worrying 50 top-flight goals.
And Owen, who scored 118 goals in 216 appearances for Liverpool, believes Lallana will be a success at Anfield, but feels Rodgers now must turn his attention to his defence.
“Lallana is another good buy for Liverpool. Plenty of attacking options for next season but slightly surprised Brendan Rogers hasn’t added a defender to his squad yet,” Owen told Sportlobster.
Lallana becomes the third Southampton player to leave this summer following Lambert’s Liverpool move and Luke Shaw’s reported £31m switch to Manchester United last week.
Owen isn’t surprised by the Saints exodus after Mauricio Pochettino quit St Mary’s to take charge of Spurs, but the ex-Liverpool man believes the south coast are getting good value for their youth products.
“As expected, Southampton finding it hard to keep their star players,” Owen added.
“Shame but almost inevitable. On the positive side, they are getting top dollar for players that cost them nothing which should help build a stronger foundation for the future.”
