Liverpool transfers: Reds ‘to beat Arsenal to Javier Manquillo deal’

Liverpool transfers: The Reds have beaten Arsenal to Javier Manquillo's signature, say reports in Spain

Liverpool are set to sign Atletico Madrid defender Javier Manquillo after beating Arsenal to his signature, according to reports in Spain.

Brendan Rodgers is looking to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season amid the continuing uncertainty surrounding Daniel Agger’s Anfield future.

The Northern Irishman is also reportedly keen to add competition for Glen Johnson at right-back next term.

Arsenal were believed to be keen on signing the Spain Under-20 international on loan with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.

But Spanish newspaper AS claims that Liverpool are now in pole position to sign the 20-year-old and could conclude a deal in the coming days.

Manquillo has made just six La Liga appearances since joining the Atletico first-team last season, where he previously was a regular starter with the B squad.

The defender is said to have rejected moves to Getafe, Rayo Vallecano and Olympique Marseille in order to play Champions League football at Anfield next season.
