Podolski, Ozil and more: Twitter reacts as Germany thrash Brazil

Lukas Podolski and Mesut Özil both tweet their thoughts as Germany thrash Brazil 7-1 to reach the World Cup final

Brazil suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in World Cup history as Germany scored five times in the first half to reach the final with a crushing 7-1 victory.

Thomas Muller volleyed home from a corner, before Miroslav Klose swept in to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer with his 16th goal.

Toni Kroos drove in the third and then tapped in his second, before Sami Khedira made it 5-0 from 12 yards. Substitute Andre Schurrle then added two more after the break before Oscar netted a late consolation for the hosts.

The ruthless demolition inevitably prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates as the action unfolded.

Ex-Norwich City man Darren Huckerby (@hucks6dh6) calls it right: “Think Germany are gonna bust up Brazil tonight, what do you folks think? #WorldCup2014”

Former Liverpool man Luis Garcia (@LuchoGarcia14) pays tribute to Klose as he makes it 2-0: “We have a record !!! Klose scores his 16th goal and pass Ronaldo as a top scorer in the World Cups. What a legend!!!”

QPR’s Charlie Austin (@chazaustin9) is in shock as Kroos makes it three: “This is madness”

German tennis star Sabine Lisicki (@sabinelisicki) is loving it: “OMG WHAT IS GOING ON. WE ARE ON FIRE!!!! 3:0”

Robbie Savage (@RobbieSavage8) is speechless: “Wow”

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku (@RomeluLukaku9) can’t believe what he’s seeing: “Ooooooh myyyyy gooooooooood”

Goalkeeper John Ruddy (@Johnruddy86) chimes in: “Oh wow. This would be the comeback of all comebacks if the Brazilians can pull this off! #BRAvsGER”

Everton’s Shane Duffy (@ShaneDuffy34) can’t believe it: “Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh NO!!!!!”

Liverpool legent Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) is in awe: “Might be a declaration coming. Brazil terrible and naive … Germany in full flow. Awesome display.”

Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) doesn’t think Brazil’s missing players are to blame: “They would have lost comfortably whether Neymar or Thiago Silva played as well. Wonder were all the Brazilians who abused me today are now?”

Ex-Manchester United man Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) is watching through his fingers: “No more please..I can’t take this no more…it’s hurting..feel for the Brazilian fans here….wow. Will these players ever recover from this”

Newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic (@DjokerNole) is in shock, too: “What is just happening here? WOW!”

Ex-Germany boss Jürgen Klinsmann (@J_Klinsmann) has left Caps Lock on: “GERMANY WRITING WORLD CUP HISTORY TODAY !!! HUGE HUGE COMPLIMENT !!! SO PROUD OF THEM !!”

Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) adds some more of his views: “All this “sing the national anthem,it shows passion” talk – doesn’t mean nothing when you get out on that pitch. Show ya passion on the pitch. I hope the Brazilians don’t look for a scapegoat here….it’s a team effort & they weren’t good enough as a group”

Liverpool legend John Aldridge (@Realaldo474) tweets his post-match thoughts: “Germany were fantastic. It’s very sad for me to watch the greatest football nation humiliated in their own back yard, Shadows of 1970!”

Wigan man James McArthur (@jamesmcarthur16) salutes Klose’s milestone: “What a achievement for klose tonight. Top goal scorer in World Cup finals. Nice record to have #penaltyboxman”

Arsenal star Lukas Podolski (@Podolski10) is delighted: “Amazing win !! Rio we are coming….#final #yeah #dfb #poldi #GERBRA #rio #team”

As is his club and international team-mate Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088): “what a match! Estádio do Maracanã – great to see you again! #GER #Rio #WorldCup #happy”

And that just leaves Barton (@Joey7Barton) to have the final say: “This is what happens when a severely over rated team runs into a seriously under rated team. #implosion”
