Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United are making “big steps” under his guidance.

The 62-year-old United manager, who signed a three-year deal at Old Trafford in May, masterminded his side’s third successive pre-season victory on Tuesday as the Red Devils beat Inter Milan on penalties.

It’s the third match and we make big steps. I’m very pleased

Van Gaal, who led the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the World Cup earlier this month, was unhappy with United’s performance in a 3-2 victory over Roma last week.

But the Red Devils manager was pleased with the improvements made against Inter Milan ahead of the start of the Premier League season.

“I’m very pleased,” Van Gaal told MUTV. “It’s the third match and we make big steps. I’m very pleased. Of course, it gives confidence to the players and that’s the most important thing. We are playing a new system and they adapt very quickly.

“Furthermore, we are up against AS Roma, second in the Italian league, and Inter, third in the Italian league. It is not a little club that we have to beat and now it’s Real Madrid. It’s nice to play against such teams and that you can show that you are at least equal.”
