Man United transfers: Louis van Gaal hints that he is looking to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season
Louis van Gaal hinted that he will look to bring in defensive reinforcements this summer after Manchester United’s 7-0 thrashing of LA Galaxy on Wednesday.
United’s options at the back have been significantly reduced following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the end of last season.
The Dutchman deployed midfielder Darren Fletcher in an unfamiliar role at the back during the second half of Wednesday’s commanding pre-season victory in the United States.
And the 62-year-old has suggested that he will look to bolster his defensive options ahead of next season.
“I have no more defenders,” Van Gaal told MUTV.
“So I have to pick a player [Fletcher] who can do the job but he is not so suitable for this position.”
Van Gaal also reserved praise for his new squad after having now worked with the Red Devils for a week, following his appointment as David Moyes’ successor.
“I have had only three days with this group and they did well,” he said.
“The first training session was not so good but the second session was much better already. So they are picking up and I was very proud of the boys.”
