United are currently short at the back following the departures of veteran duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the end of last season.
And former Red Devils midfielder Scholes is expecting Van Gaal to bolster United’s rearguard ahead of the new campaign, claiming that the current squad looks “unbalanced”.
“[Van Gaal] said it himself and the squad looks unbalanced to me,” said Scholes.
“They have a number of number 10s, with Juan Mata, Shinji Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj, and Ander Herrera looks more like a number 10 than a central midfield player.
“Tom Cleverley you could argue is a number 10 as well, so there is a lot of those types of players but they are struggling a little bit for defenders.
“Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are the only recognised defenders. He said he likes Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett who are up and coming, but his priority will be defenders.”
