Man United transfers: We’re ready to spend big, declares Red Devils chief
"We are in a very strong financial position. We can make big signings," says Manchester United chief Ed Woodward
Ed Woodward insists that Manchester United are ready to spend big this summer.
The Red Devils have already wrapped up deals to bring in Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera but have been linked with a host of other players ahead of Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge.
Mats Hummels and Daley Blind are among the names to have been touted as possible targets for United in recent weeks.
We are in a very strong financial position. We can make big signings
And executive vice-chairman Woodward has reassured fans that the club have the resources needed to sign the players they are after in the coming weeks.
“Of course it [breaking transfer records] is within our capabilities,” Woodward is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. “Are we afraid of doing that? No.
“The reality is that we’re not afraid of spending significant amounts of money in the transfer market.
“Whether it’s a record or not doesn’t really resonate with us. What resonates is that a top, top, elite player, that the manager wants, is going to be a star for Manchester United.
“I get pointed in the direction of a target that the manager wants and there is an assessment of what that might cost and I’ll negotiate hard to do the best I can on the trade.
“I stand by what I said – there is no budget. We are in a very strong financial position. We can make big signings. [But] That doesn’t mean we go and throw money around.”
