Lucas Leiva has tipped Philippe Coutinho to step out of Luis Suarez’s shadow and become an even bigger diamond at Liverpool.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who was not part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, starred in the Reds’s 1-0 pre-season defeat by Roma in Boston on Wednesday.

Coutinho is facing stiff competition for places following the arrival of England international Adam Lallana, whilst there are reports that the Reds want Marco Reus.

And Lucas is confident his compatriot will become an even better player for the Merseyside outfit as he continues to adapt to the Premier League.

“He keeps improving, and we will have a bigger diamond, because he can develop a lot more,” Lucas is quoted as saying by Liverpool Echo.

“He is a player who is always working hard, especially physically he’s improving as well, and being more aggressive to help him cope with the Premier League.”
