Robin van Persie says he needs a three-week break to recover from a gruelling World Cup ahead of his return to Manchester United.

The 30-year-old started six of the Netherlands’ seven games in Brazil and scored four goals as Louis van Gaal’s side finished third.

And the Manchester United striker is looking forward to having some time off ahead of his return to the Old Trafford club for Van Gaal’s debut season in charge.

The World Cup has been heavy going for me

“I need the three weeks’ break,” said Van Persie.

“The World Cup has been heavy going for me. I gave everything I had in every single game. That was it – I had nothing left.

“We worked really hard at the finals, and we are like lemons that have been squeezed dry.”

Van Persie spent six weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury towards the end of last season but still scored a total of 12 Premier League goals for the Red Devils.
