Walcott, Hazard and more: Twitter reacts as Germany win the World Cup

Theo Walcott and Eden Hazard both tweet their thoughts as Germany beat Argentina in extra-time to win the World Cup

Germany were crowned world champions for the fourth time as Mario Götze’s extra-time winner beat Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.

The Germany substitute expertly controlled Andre Schurrle’s cross with his chest before volleying into the bottom corner with seven minutes to play.

Both sides wasted chances in normal time at the Maracanã, with Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi both dragging wide.

The biggest game in world football inevitably prompted a huge response on Twitter, and here is a pick of our favourite updates, in chronological order as usual.

Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) is not impressed by Higuain’s first-half attempt: “Shocking miss #higuain”

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) praises defender Jerôme Boateng: “Boateng has been immense today. Hummels lacking mobility, outside the box been left a few times. Garay & DiMicheles been very good too”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) is predicting an Argentina win as the game heads into extra-time: “Still backing Argentina. Still backing Messi. #WorldCupFinal #extratime”

But it isn’t long before Götze nets the winner, and Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) is impressed: “Wow ….. #Goetze”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) chimes in: “Good Goetze! What a finish!”

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere (@JackWilshere) praises the match-winner: “Player! gotzemario you legend!!”

Gunners forward Theo Walcott (@theowalcott) is quick to congratulate his German team-mates: “Massive Congrats you #afc Germans! @MesutOzil1088 @mertesacker @Podolski10 #WorldCupFinal”

And their team-mate Kieran Gibbs (@KieranGibbs) also chimes in: “Congratulations to my boys @Podolski10 @MesutOzil1088 and @mertesacker #WorldCupFinal #afc”

Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) is not surprised by the outcome: “So the best prepared team win the World Cup. Only team to build their own training base. Coincidence? I think not…”

Eden Hazard (@hazardeden10) is pleased for his Chelsea team-mate: “Congratulation my man @Andre_Schuerrle … See you soon.”

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech (@PetrCech) chimes in as well: “Great final… Congratulations to #GER and especially @Andre_Schuerrle !”

Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) is delighted: “Well done boys … Outstanding after so many near misses … Schweinsteiger in a different league”

Patrick Vieira (@OfficialVieira) feels that the Germans are worthy winners: “Well done to #GER. Best team from the start won. They deserve it, not just for their performances in 2014, but for their last 4 tournaments”

As does Liverpool defender Jose Enrique (@Jesanchez3): “Congratulations to #germany. They completely deserve it. Good night to everyone”

Xabi Alonso (@XabiAlonso) is happy for his Germany colleagues: “Congratulations to Germany! The best team in the tournament won. Well done Sami and @MesutOzil1088 , enjoy it!!”

Michael Owen’s (@themichaelowen) pre-tournament bet didn’t come off: “My wallet is feeling the pain having backed Argentina pre tournament but fair play to Germany, they are always there in big tournaments.”

And that just leaves Lukas Podolski (@Podolski10) to have the final say, in typical fashion: “AHA!”
