Fernando Torres endured a forgettable World Cup as Spain crashed out at the group stage – and the Chelsea striker’s struggles look set to continue after a horror miss against Olimpija Ljubljana.

The 30-year-old forward is facing increased competition for a starting spot after Diego Costa’s £32m switch from Atletico Madrid and Didier Drogba’s fairy tale return to Stamford Bridge.

However, Torres, who scored four Premier League goals last season, won’t have impressed Blues manager Jose Mourinho after a shocking miss during Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over the Slovenian side.

Unlike his compatriot Torres, Costa did make a positive impression after scoring his first Chelsea goal before Kurt Zouma netted the west London side’s winner.
