Arsene Wenger is backing Alexis Sánchez to successfully lead the Arsenal attack in the absence of first-choice striker Olivier Giroud.

The France international forward has been ruled out until the new year after undergoing surgery on a broken tibia bone.

Much has been made of the Gunners’ perceived lack of fire-power up front, but Wenger is convinced that summer signing Sánchez is capable of filling in for Giroud.

“He has many qualities to lead the line,” said Wenger.

“He is first of all brave, he is strong in the challenge – which you wouldn’t expect when you look at his size – he’s very quick and very mobile as well.

“He’s a real fighter and once his link play and runs get better, he can be very good in this role.”

Arsenal travel to Leicester City on Sunday looking to secure their second Premier League win of the season.

“I remember when I arrived in England and Leicester were a force in the Premier League,” Wenger added.

“They disappeared for quite a long time but they’ve come back and that shows you that clubs never die when they have the potential and work well.”
