The 19-year-old has caught the eye with a number of impressive displays at centre-half for Wenger’s side since joining the Gunners from Southampton earlier this summer.
He has the vision, the tactical ability and a big engine
Chambers received his first senior England call-up for the forthcoming games against Norway and Switzerland on Thursday.
And Wenger feels that the defender could be deployed as a midfielder in years to come.
Wenger said: “He has the potential to do it [play in midfield], honestly yes.
“He has the vision, the tactical ability and a big engine. He can absorb the effort that is demanded in there.
“But he can as well become a very good centre-back and it’s very difficult to find that quality at centre-back today.”
Wenger also stressed that he hopes the teenager does not come under too much pressure early in his career.
“I think he has the character to deal with the pressure, the attentional he will get,” he added.
“He is a kind boy. I believe he has a good family environment and I hope in the national team he will be protected a little bit as well.”
