Besiktas

Tolga Zengin Didn’t have too much troubling him in the first half, and he successfully gathered in any threats that came his way. Stayed alert right until the very end. 8/10

Ismail Koybasi The Super Lig player offered himself as an outlet on the left throughout, but his delivery wasn’t quite good enough. Tried his luck with a speculative, long-range effort shortly before the break, but it bobbled harmlessly into the opposing custodian’s hands. Brave overall, if a little rough. 6

Ramon Motta Was a positive attacking outlet for the home side on the flank, pushing forward from deep. Was booked for a cynical foul on Sánchez. 7

Ersan Gulum Had his hands full with Sánchez, defending the left flank. Did well, on ocassion, to keep the former Barcelona star quiet. Lofted some loose balls in to an often congested Arsenal box. 7

Pedro Franco Operating in the middle of the park, he didn’t look the least bit out of his depth against the Premier League team. Like his team-mates, his decision-making was very positive, preferring to move the ball forward, always looking for a breakthrough. Manager Slaven Bilic will have enjoyed his clattering aerial challenge on Giroud. 7

Olcay Sahan Really should have scored in the 48th minute. Played in well, the Besiktas’s No10 cut in from the left side of the 18-yard box to create a fraction of space for a snapshot, but his curling effort faded narrowly wide of the far post. Showed great energy. 8

Veli Kavlak Could have had a penalty in the 29th minute when Chambers impeded a pass and he went down in the box, but the referee paid it no attention. Made some sharp moves. Forced Szczesny into a save on the half hour mark. 7

Necip Uysal The 23-year-old midfielder was relatively anonymous for much of the match as he let his team-mates get on with the attacking side of things. 5

Oguzhan Oyzakup The former Gunner and Youth Cup winner was involved in a few early exchanges to put the away side under the cosh. Looked lively. Set up Ba in the ninth minute for a chance with a perfectly-flighted ball in over the cover. Was substituted later in the match having spent all his energy. 8

Mustafa Pektemek Couldn’t quite find the killer pass he was looking for in the opening half, but his industry was a real positive for the fans to witness. 6

Demba Ba (Man of the Match) A cheeky start to proceedings from the former Chelsea man saw his shot from tip-off force Szczesny into a dramatic save after just four seconds. Should have scored in the ninth minute, but was denied by Szczesny. Fluffed his lines after a mistake from Chambers allowed him in, as he dragged his shot wide of the goalkeeper’s right-hand post. Continued to look for the ball, despite a deterioration in the delivery coming his way. 8

Substitutions

Gokhan Tore Came on for Olcay in the 73rd minute. 6

Wojciech Szczesny Dealt with the early Besiktas threats well, and will be happy with the clean sheet. 6

Mathieu Debuchy Arsenal’s right-back had a busy time contending with pressure from Motta and others, and he looked prepared to deal with the danger. Combined neatly with Sánchez in the 70th minute to whip in a dangerous cross, but their front-line failed to convert. 7

Calum Chambers In an intimidating environment, some might have been worried about Chambers’ ability to cope, but he did well, particularly in the opening exchanges. With half-time fast approaching, he did make an error that could have proven costly, but thankfully for him, the hosts couldn’t capitalise. 6

Laurent Koscielny Didn’t look too comfortable when the imposing Ba was facing him down, and Tuesday’s tie was a real challenge for him. 5

Nacho Monreal Wasn’t afraid to move high up the pitch to offer support to his team-mates. Could have done more. Was booked in the 66th minute. 6

Mikel Arteta Was more than willing to break up the Turkish side’s play. In particular, his battle with Kavlak was key. Was taken off injured six minutes after the restart. 6

Jack Wilshere Helped out at the back whenever danger lurked. A smart give-and-go with Giroud allowed him room seven minutes before the break to fashion a decent opportunity – but it was saved. Tuesday’s clash was a reminder of his sporadic displays. 6

Aaron Ramsey Turned on the magic rarely. But when he did it was wondrous. A clever chipped through ball had set Giroud up with the perfect chance, but the striker couldn’t react quickly enough. Was dismissed from the field for two instance of jersey pulling and will now miss the return leg. 5

Alexis Sanchez Arsenal’s best player. Looked to capitalise on any defensive lapses by nicking possession. His pacey bursts from midfield continued to cause problems. He was their main source of inspiration; a real live-wire. 7

Santi Cazorla Set up by Sanchez after some lax defending, he wriggled his way through the cover to flash a shot across the face of goal in the early exchanges. Looked hungry for goals. And he nearly got one with a cleverly struck dead-ball that had the goalkeeper flapping. 6

Olivier Giroud Found himself with his back to goal in the 10th minute, but after going to ground, couldn’t find a decisive finish and the danger was eventually smothered by the goalkeeper. Didn’t really offer enough. Went missing for large periods. 5

Substitutions

Mathieu Flamini Introduced in the 51st minute for Arteta, he attempted to merge successfully with an eventful game. Wasted no time in getting stuck in and duly received a yellow card just five minutes after coming on. 5

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Came on for Sanchez in the 73rd minute. Could have stolen it late on if it hadn’t been for some excellent goalkeeping reflexes. 6
