Mario Balotelli has bought straight into Liverpool’s philosophy, according to Brendan Rodgers.

The Reds manager handed the Italy international his Liverpool debut at White Hart Lane as the visitors were emphatic 3-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur.

Balotelli, who moved to Anfield in a £16m deal from AC Milan on Monday, had an early opportunity to break the deadlock but aimed a header straight at Spurs shot stopper Hugo Lloris.

Raheem Sterling scored the Reds’s first goal in the eighth minute before Steven Gerrard’s second-half penalty and Alberto Moreno’s superb solo strike sealed three points.

And Rodgers, who has signed nine players in the summer transfer window, heaped praise on “brilliant” Balotelli as the striker is tasked with filling Luis Suarez’s void.

“I thought he was excellent. He’s bought straight into our team ethic. He’s trained well and has put all that background noise about him to one side,” Rodgers told BBC Sport.

“He’s been brilliant. You’ve seen his appetite today, his work, pressure, strength and quality. He has a wonderful touch for a big guy.”
