Commonwealth Games 2014: Purvis exceeded own expectations with gold

Commonwealth Games 2014: Scotland’s Daniel Purvis says he had exceeded his own expectations as he won Glasgow gold

Scotland’s Daniel Purvis admitted he had exceeded his own expectations as he rounded off the Glasgow 2014 gymnastics competition by winning gold on the men’s parallel bars.

Purvis, winner of team bronze at London 2012, was the last man to go in the afternoon’s final, with England’s Nile Wilson and Max Whitlock laying down early markers.

I was so proud to do it in front of my family and such a great crowd – it’s been just as fantastic as the Olympics

But he held his nerve, posting a score of 15.333 points to take the gold and complete a full set of medals having won men’s team silver and bronze in the men’s individual rings final.

“I went for my hardest routine because I knew if I held back I wouldn’t have come in the top three – in some ways it’s better to go last and see what everyone’s done,” he said.

“Coming into the Games I wasn’t expecting a gold, silver and bronze and the team medal was the most important thing – competing with my teammates has been fantastic.

“I was so proud to do it in front of my family and such a great crowd – it’s been just as fantastic as the Olympics.”

England’s Claudia Fragapane became the first English woman to win four golds at a single Commonwealth Games for 84 years with victory in the women’s floor final.

The 16-year-old, who had already won the vault, all-around and team gold earlier in the week, put in a flawless routine to score 14.541 and admitted she was speechless.

“It’s been great being here – I’m only 16 so coming out here and getting four gold medals has been amazing,” she said.

“I had nothing to lose – it was my last time competing here so I just went out there to enjoy it.”

Wilson added men’s horizontal bar gold to his parallel bar silver, with England’s Kristian Thomas, silver medallist in the vault, finishing second again while Wales’ Georgina Hockenhull took women’s beam bronze.
