Commonwealth Games 2014: Tom Daley thrilled with 10m synchro silver

Commonwealth Games 2014: Tom Daley says 11th-hour decision to compete in the 10m synchro with James Denny was worth it

Tom Daley admitted his 11th-hour decision to compete in the 10m synchro with James Denny at the Commonwealth Games was more than worth it after they scooped silver.

Daley has long been without a 10m synchro partner and contemplated not competing in the discipline in which he first won the Commonwealth title with Max Brick at Delhi 2010.

We’ve got the European Championships later this month so hopefully we’ll be able to improve on our performance there

However he decided against that and teamed up with 20-year-old Denny, just managing to put together enough training sessions to be prepared for Glasgow 2014.

And it proved worthwhile as, despite Daley relinquishing his title to Australian duo Matthew Mitcham and Dominic Bedggood, he and Denny still climbed the podium to collect silver.

Even though only four pairs dived, it was a tight final with just 0.18 points separating them in second and the Aussies in first – and Daley is expecting more from the pair at the upcoming European Championships in Berlin.

“We’re a new pair and we’ve only ever done three training sessions together, so we’re pretty happy with the way that we dived,” said Daley.

“We’ve got the European Championships later this month so hopefully we’ll be able to improve on our performance there.

“We managed to pull it out when it counted but there’s a lot of potential to improve.
“I’ve been concentrating on individual and James has been injured so it was one of those last-minute decisions to do it. We’re happy with the way we performed.”

Daley revealed that he and Denny only competed in he 10m synchro after the withdrawal of English teammates Dan Goodfellow and Matty Lee from the event last month.

The 20-year-old will return to attempt to defend his Commonwealth Games 10m platform title today (Saturday) and is anticipating and intriguing battle with Australian Olympic champion Mitcham.

“Matt’s diving really well and he’s going to be hungry for another gold but so am I – it will be a good battle,” Daley added.

“Retaining the title wasn’t anything to do with the decision to do the synchro – we wouldn’t have dived if Dan and Matty were fit so we were happy to get a silver medal.”
