England v India: Alex Hales included in ODI squad

England v India: Nottinghamshire star Alex Hales is named in the one-day squad

By Sam Rogers

Alex Hales has been named in the 15-man squad for England’s upcoming five match series against India, which begins in Bristol on Monday.

Hales, who is uncapped at 50-over level, has had a superb season in all formats and is already well-established in the shortest form of the game, as the only English player to reach three figures in T20 Internationals.

He is joined by team-mate Harry Gurney, Middlesex batsman Eoin Morgan and Kent spinner James Tredwell as the members of the squad that were not involved in the recent 3-1 Test series win against the same opposition.

Fellow Notts player Stuart Broad is set to miss the series as he receives specialist treatment on his injured right knee.

“With the ICC Cricket World Cup now less than six months away our focus over the coming months switches to identifying our strongest possible squad for that competition,” said England national selector James Whitaker.

“However this is an important series in its own right and we have selected 15 players who we believe will perform well against an Indian side with a strong one day record.

“This series presents an opportunity for players to build on their international and domestic form and demonstrate that they have the ability to win games of cricket for England.”

Whitaker has insisted that those not selected will have an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the squad that will head to Australia next spring.

“With plenty of domestic limited overs cricket still to be played this season and a series against Sri Lanka in November before finalising our World Cup squad,” Whitaker added.

“There are still opportunities for us to consider a number of players who have missed out on selection.

“I would like to wish Alastair and the rest of the squad all the very best for what will no doubt be a competitive series.”
