Brendan Rodgers has attempted to deflect the spotlight off Mario Balotelli ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Reds striker could make his Liverpool debut at White Hart Lane after completing a £16m switch to the 18-time English champions on Monday.

He has settled down very well and has looked fantastic in training. He is a good lad

The Italy international may be Rodgers’s ninth recruit of the summer transfer window, but Balotelli is undoubtedly the glamour signing at Anfield.

But Rodgers, who led Liverpool to a second-place finish last season, underlined that the team is more important than any individual.

“He is fine. He has settled down very well and has looked fantastic in training. He is a good lad. He has done very well. He is top drawer, a real class act,” Rodgers said at his pre-match media conference.

“His concentration is on his football, he is moving to Merseyside. But this is not the Mario Balotelli show. He has got a look of work to do.”

Mauricio Pochettino, who will be hoping to maintain his 100 per cent start to his Tottenham reign, believes Balotelli is an important player to have in the Premier League.

“He is a very good player and he is a star. For [the] Premier League, it is important all the big players come here,” said Pochettino after Spurs were 5-1 aggregate winners against Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday night.

“Mario is a big player and a lot of people know that he has a very good skill but it is important for the footballer and Liverpool – not for us.”
