Juan Mata could leave Manchester United before the summer transfer window closes on 1 September, says Tony Gale.

The Spain international’s first-team spot appears to be under threat after Louis van Gaal signed Angel di Maria in a British record £59.7m deal from Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.

If you look at Juan Mata and the good player that he is, has he got the dynamism that you need in that role? Di Maria has

Mata was United’s club-record signing before Di Maria’s arrival after former manager David Moyes signed the 25-year-old in a £37.1m deal in the January transfer window.

And former West Ham United star Gale reckons Mata could struggle to find a place in Van Gaal’s side, especially as the former Valencia man isn’t suited to a role on the wing.

“Mata could be the one to go. You have a look at it, and he wasn’t a Van Gaal signing,” Gayle told Sky Sports News.

“I go back to Mourinho selling him. Mourinho doesn’t sell for no reason. If you look at Juan Mata and the good player that he is, has he got the dynamism that you need in that role? Di Maria has.

“He can drop the shoulder and he’ll break through lines with the ball. Mata is more a passer of the ball. Mata is a poor man’s David Silva. I wonder if he could be the one making way. I think Mata is the one in danger.”
